PROPOSITION NO. 1, submitting Local Law No. U-2016 to the electors of the Village of Mamaroneck
To be voted upon by the qualified electors of the Village of Mamaroneck at the General Election to be held on November 8, 2016
SHALL THERE BE APPROVED AND ADOPTED IN THE VILLAGE OF MAMARONECK, NEW YORK, A LOCAL LAW ENTITLED “LOCAL LAW NO. U-2016, “A LOCAL LAW REGARDING THE APPOINTMENT OF THE VILLAGE ATTORNEY, AMENDING SECTION 78-4 OF THE CODE OF THE VILLAGE OF MAMARONECK TO TRANSFER TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FROM THE MAYOR SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THE AUTHORITY TO APPOINT THE VILLAGE ATTORNEY, AND TO FILL VACANCIES IN SUCH OFFICE, SUPERSEDING SECTIONS 3-312 AND 4-400 OF THE VILLAGE LAW OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK”?
Victor, Keith and Leon support Proposition No. 1.
Proposition No. 1 gives the entire Board a voice in hiring and firing the Village Attorney.
Now, only the mayor has a say in these matters, which creates a conflict of interest for the Village Attorney in his advice to the full Board when the mayor’s views are not the same as those of the majority of the Board. We believe Village residents will benefit from more objective and transparent legal advice if the Village Attorney is fully accountable to the entire Board, not just to the mayor, regardless of which political party has a majority on the Board.
Vote YES for Proposition No. 1.
